Abstract

The mission of the computerized laboratory information system (LIS) is to manage laboratory workflow, patient information, and deliver results for patient clinical management accurately and in a timely manner. In recent years, the laboratory has been under pressure to enhance their workflow (e.g., Lean initiatives, automation, and tracking) and to expand the menu of tests offered for them to remain competitive, while at the same time improve their quality of service. In order to accomplish this, the LIS needs to remain continuously operational with minimal or no downtime. Moreover, LIS staff needs to ensure that all operations are compliant with mandated rules and regulations. Optimal LIS operations depend on having adequate, dedicated and skilled informatics staff.
