Abstract
As an essential component of the mononuclear phagocytic system and a natural large blood filter, the liver constantly comes into contact with circulating pathogens, particularly those entering the portal circulation. The biliary tree is protected from infections by tight hepatocellular junctions at the parenchymal/vascular interface, bile flow and bile constituents, and the sphincter of Oddi at the ampulla of Vater.
