Disorders of Calcium: Hypocalcemia

As stated in Chap. 17, Ca2+ homeostasis is maintained by the interrelationship among intestinal absorption, bone turnover, and renal excretion. Alterations in any one of these functions may lead to changes in the extracellular [Ca2+]. A plasma [Ca2+] < 8.5 mg/dL defines hypocalcemia. Hypocalcemia is less common than hypercalcemia, and the causes are explained in this chapter. Since Ca2+ is bound to albumin, a decrease in plasma albumin concentration may cause hypocalcemia. For each gram decrease of albumin from normal (i.e., 4.0 g/dL), [Ca2+] decreases by 0.8 mg/dL.
