Teaching by Example: Best Practices for Education in the Operating Room and the Lecture Hall

Abstract

As medical education evolves, the next generation of medical educators must adapt to new paradigms and adopt new strategies for effective clinical and didactic education to remain current and effective teachers. The most successful anesthesia educators in the operating room environment are able to balance the needs of patient care and the demands of an ever-increasing clinical schedule and still make time for teaching at the bedside. It is not enough, however, just to make time for education. Today’s clinician educator must also create an effective learning environment, elicit feedback, encourage students to teach others, and, most importantly, teach by example.
