The Place for Simulation Teaching

Abstract

Medical education is rapidly changing. Advanced technology has compelled educators to produce newer, more innovative teaching strategies, and techniques. Never has this been more evident than in the realm of simulation. More sophisticated mannequins, with computer enhanced capabilities of presenting normal and not-so-normal physiology, are inundating academic training centers. Excellence in healthcare delivery, improved physician competency leading to better outcomes, and patient safety, are areas in which simulation is front and center. This chapter aims to provide the reader with a look at the various components of simulation in medical education and the significant impact it has made on physician training in many medical specialties, including the field of anesthesiology.
