Abstract
This chapter begins by describing the construction of geothermal wells. The drilling process and equipment follow, but this is under continuous development, and the techniques described have been chosen to illustrate the issues rather than the latest practice. A section on well design begins with the basics of stress analysis and theories of failure and then describes casing selection and particular modes of failure to be designed against, in both the construction of the well and its later operation. Wellhead equipment is described. The units in this chapter are mixed, some SI and some imperial, because the materials required for drilling are manufactured in imperial units.
