Pathologic Myopia

Abstract

Cataract surgery in eyes with high myopia is a special situation. Careful preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative planning is mandatory. This chapter discusses epidemiology, risk evaluation, intraocular lens calculations, appropriateness for premium intraocular lenses, and the informed consent process. Considerations for eyes with previous refractive surgery are identified. Also discussed are aspects regarding timing of surgery, anesthesia, and specific surgical techniques, with a focus on methods of nuclear disassembly. Finally, postoperative care and expectations are explored.
