Abstract

Starting from fundamental optical concepts, this work has presented some of the important issues that must be addressed in order to perform the high-contrast imaging necessary for direct imaging of exoplanets and measurement of exoplanetary environments in the near term. While ground-based telescopes continue to grow in size and push the limits of their capability, it is expected that effects of atmospheric turbulence will limit the targets they can access to Jupiter-like exoplanet at near infrared wavelengths.
