Abstract
The widespread practice of screening mammography in the USA and Europe has resulted in detection of smaller breast cancers and reduction in mortality [Nelson et al., Ann Intern Med 151:727–737, W737–742, 2009]. However, the surgical management of the primary cancer has not kept pace with the diagnostic advances. The concept of in situ ablation of breast cancer with a non-cutting technique appeals to patients, provided it is safe and efficacious. Several in situ techniques, either by heat (laser, radiofrequency, focused ultrasound, and microwave) or by cold (cryotherapy), are emerging as alternatives to lumpectomy [Huston, Simmons, Am J Surg 189:694–701, 2005].
Interstitial laser therapy (ILT) as a minimally invasive technique used for treatment of benign and malignant breast tumors is the subject of this chapter.
