Part of the Graduate Texts in Mathematics book series (GTM, volume 225)

In the next few chapters, we will construct the irreducible representations of the symmetric group in parallel with the irreducible algebraic representations of \(\mathrm{GL}(n, \mathbb{C})\). In this chapter, we will construct some generalized characters of \(\mathrm{GL}(n, \mathbb{C})\). The connection with the representation theory of S k will become clear later.
