Part of the Graduate Texts in Mathematics book series (GTM, volume 225)

It may be easiest to read the next chapter with examples in mind. In this chapter we will describe various root systems and in particular we will illustrate the rank 2 root systems. Since the purpose of this chapter is to give examples, we will state various facts here without proof. The proofs will come in later chapters.
