Abstract
There is considerable evidence that people show persistent patterns of personality, intelligence, interests, and achievement throughout their lives. Such traits, a concern of psychologists and educators, also have a major bearing on the recruitment and productivity of scientists. The question, ‘What makes a scientist?’, remains open, but one approach is the recent sociopsychological analysis of eminent research scientists:
