Bioactive Peptides and Lung Development

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Clinical Physiology Series ((CLINPHY))

Abstract

Recently there has been a surge in interest in the role of specific growth factors or bioactive peptides (Table 11.1) in maturation of type II pneumocytes and other epithelial cells in developing lung. Lung development is a complex process involving multiple interactions between different cell types and secreted factors; among these, epithelial—mesenchymal interactions have been most extensively studied. Cellular processes occurring during this process include cell migration, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cell differentiation.
