Current Trends of Quality Assurance Models in LIS Education

Quality in LIS (Library and Information Science) education is a value judgement, differently interpreted by various stakeholders, such as governments, employers, students, administrators and professors. Quality Assurance (QA) models focus both on objectives of accountability and quality improvement and should be understood in an international perspective, looking forward agreed standards of quality of LIS education. In a globalised world, QA in LIS education has the aim of facilitating the recognition of qualifications for professionals. The chapter describes the work done by the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) Education and Training Section (SET) which has been active in supporting internationalisation of the profession and QA in LIS education realising Guidelines for a core curriculum and equivalency of qualifications. The current QA model of IFLA SET with the title “International Guidelines for Equivalency and Reciprocity of Qualifications for LIS Professionals” is integrating all the Guidelines published by the Section. The current issues in QA of LIS education is that of knowing how to adapt theories and concepts elaborated at an international level to single situations and objectively complex contexts like libraries in developing countries
