Abstract
This chapter introduces the reader to the spectrum of congenital heart malformations that are associated with abnormalities of the cardiac valves. The author’s intent is to describe the basic structural anatomy of the cardiac valves, the pathologic features and clinical manifestations of common abnormalities that affect them, the indications and timing of surgical intervention, and the surgical techniques used for repair.
This chapter begins with a brief review of the embryology of the heart with emphasis on the development of the cardiac valves. The remainder of the chapter discusses congenital, rather than acquired, atrioventricular and semilunar valve abnormalities. The chapter ends with a brief description of congenital cardiac malformations where cardiac valve pathology is secondary to the underlying abnormality (i.e., Tetralogy of Fallot).
