Hybrid imaging is becoming popular in cardiac imaging and currently refers to combining CT imaging with nuclear imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET) or single-photon emission CT (SPECT). Hybrid imaging offers the ability to assess the anatomy of the heart and coronary arteries, as well as the functional evaluation, at rest and during stress. The clinical experience of cardiac hybrid imaging is rapidly increasing, and the clinical potential of this technique for the detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) and its severity has been recognized. However, the evidence is still limited, especially in specific subpopulations. It is likely that in the near future the primary clinical use of hybrid imaging is not only in the detection of CAD but also in other molecular imaging applications that are entering clinical work.
