Abstract

Inguinal hernia surgery remains the most common elective general surgical procedure performed in the United States. It is a relatively safe operation, with worldwide morbidity averaging 6%, mortality 0.3%, and a recurrence rate in the range of less than 1–10%. Complications of inguinal herniorrhaphy can occur both intraoperatively as well as during the postoperative period. This chapter will focus on intraoperative cord structure complications in both open and laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy. The focus of this chapter will be on male patients due to the relative inconsequences of cord injuries in female patients.
