Abstract

The code generation techniques described in Chapter 7 are simple, and generate straightforward unoptimized code, which may be sufficient for rapid prototyping or demonstration purposes, but which will not satisfy the modern user. In this chapter we will look at many optimization techniques. Since optimal code generation is in general NP-complete, many of the algorithms used are heuristic, but some, for example BURS, yield provably optimal results in restricted situations.
