Abstract
The results of an experimental study of boiling behavior of dilute emulsions are reported. Dilute emulsions of pentane in water and FC-72 in water are investigated during boiling on a small diameter horizontal heated wire. Boiling curves of overall heat transfer coefficient as a function of temperature are measured, and concurrently video is recorded of the boiling process. A jump in heat transfer coefficient is correlated with the sudden appearance of large bubbles that remain attached to the heated wire. Changes in the observed behavior and population of bubbles around the heated wire are compared to trends in the heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer results are found to agree well with other results in the literature obtained with emulsions of different compositions when controlled for the degree of sub-cooling.
