Abstract
The interest of our laboratory for sometime, has been centered around the subject of ovarian steroidogenesis and its control by tropic hormones . I would like to present here some of the results we have obtained on one aspect of our work, namely, the study of the hormonal control of steroidogenesis in the corpus luteum. Historically the earliest demonstration of a hormonal influence on steroidogenesis in the corpus luteum was carried out using the rat, and it was found that prolactin was the luteotrop-ic agent in this animal (1). Subsequently it has become increasingly clear that prolactin is probably not luteotropic in several other species, such as the pig, the rabbit, the cow, and the human. In regard to the cow, there is considerable evidence from in vivo and in vitro studies to suggest that luteinizing hormone (LH) is the luteotropic hormone which regulates steroidogenesis in the corpus luteum (2).
