Abstract

Optical imaging is a useful tool for flow visualization. When used as a quantitative technique in thermal measurements, the procedure needs to be carefully benchmarked and validated. These comparisons can be against independent measurements and against published data. Over and above, the images should satisfy certain internal consistency checks. These include checks on mass and energy balance on various scales. When the field being measured is unsteady, it may be difficult to compare instantaneous data across various sources. Under these conditions, the comparison is in terms of the statistics of the time-dependent flow property. In the present chapter, schlieren and shadowgraphy techniques are evaluated for quantitative characterization in various flow configurations. The comparison is against independent measurements using a Mach–Zehnder interferometer and a hotwire anemometer. In addition, comparison is reported against published data. Configurations considered for comparison are the following
