Assessing Risk, Recidivism, and Dangerousness in Hispanics

Guide to Psychological Assessment with Hispanics

Abstract

The assessment of risk (including both violent and sexual), recidivism, and dangerousness in adults most frequently involves predicting the probability of either an initial offense or a subsequent offense (typically criminal reoffending), either sexual or otherwise (e.g., violence and other criminal behavior). This type of assessment is extraordinarily complicated, and while certain socioeconomic variables (e.g., gender) have been studied extensively with regard to risk prediction and recidivism, such extensive research has not been conducted on ethnic differences. In this chapter, we review measures that assess violence risk and recidivism, we discuss measures commonly used with sexual offenders, we review relevant research conducted with Hispanics, and we provide some guidelines for conducting such assessments with Hispanics.
