Assessment of Dementia in the Hispanic Client: A Neuropsychological Perspective

Guide to Psychological Assessment with Hispanics

Abstract

With an astounding 62.9 % of Hispanics aged 85 and older exhibiting dementia-related symptoms and a substantial portion of Hispanics speaking Spanish only, the need for psychometrically sound measures designed to assess for cognitive impairment in this cohort is essential. This chapter offers a critical evaluation of the current assessment practices employed to assess for dementia in the Hispanic client. Assessment measures and batteries specifically designed to assess for dementia are reviewed, and research on these measures and batteries with Hispanics is discussed. Finally, guidelines for assessing cognitive impairment with this group are provided.
