Abstract

Suicide is the 12th leading cause of death among Hispanics. As the Hispanic population in the United States continues to increase, it is essential to identify and implement effective assessment strategies in order to decrease the risk of suicide in this population. Yet, suicidal Hispanic adults present a challenge to clinicians. With factors such as low rates of treatment engagement, unique immigration experiences, and acculturation processes overwhelmingly affecting Hispanic clients, accurate assessment of suicide risk proves difficult. Limited Spanish language assessment measures further contribute to the problem. This chapter will present a number of important issues that should be considered in order to conduct an effective suicide assessment with this population, as well as the major Spanish language suicide assessment measures.
