Abstract
Doctors Buchman and Chalfin are to be commended for their emphasis on health education as a means of encouraging adoption of healthy behaviors, and thereby reducing the toll—physical, emotional, and economic—of coronary artery disease, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other similar chronic illnesses. As they state “To the extent that prevention or even delay of the onset of a chronic illness corresponds to sustained health, prevention of disease is desirable from both personal and societal perspectives.” However, even were the populous to modify its health behaviors, thereby achieving what has been termed “compressed morbidity” [1], people will still get sick and be injured.
