Abstract
Educating the general public about responsible lighting is a massive undertaking for those who value the environment above. Telling your own neighbors about it can also be a daunting prospect. When the International Dark-Sky Association and the BAA Campaign for Dark Skies began their work in 1988 and 1989, respectively, the concept of “light pollution” certainly existed in the minds of astronomers, environmentalists and the lighting community, but almost no-one else had heard of the term. It is now in the general vocabulary, but the perception of the role of light at night is still dominated in many minds by the idea of “the more light, the better.”
