Orbiting the Moon
NASA planned two piloted Apollo-Saturn missions in 1968: AS-205 (Apollo 7) to prove the Block II spacecraft ready for a lunar mission, and AS-503 (Apollo 8), the first piloted flight aboard a Saturn V to test the lunar module in low Earth orbit. Because of development delays, however, Apollo 8 would test the command and service modules in lunar orbit, and is remembered for the spectacular pictures of Earth rising over the lunar horizon.
