Abstract

In this chapter, we are going to present all of the results that relate to linear operators on abstract finite-dimensional vector spaces. Aside from a section on polynomials, we start with a section on linear differential equations in order to motivate both some material from Chap. 1 and also give a reason for why it is desirable to study matrix representations. Eigenvectors and eigenvalues are first introduced in the context of differential equations where they are used to solve such equations. It is, however, possible to start with the Sect. 2.3 and ignore the discussion on differential equations.
