Abstract
Current data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) demonstrating a threefold rise in the prevalence of childhood obesity over the past several decades has led to the medical community’s recent call to arms to directly address an evolving healthcare crisis. With increasing evidence demonstrating the overall spectrum and severity of obesity-related comorbid diseases in the severely obese pediatric and adolescent population, interest in the application of surgical weight loss procedures continues to gain attention and be the focus of much academic debate. It is well recognized that adolescent bariatric surgery is an emerging field and as such will continue to be the focus of debate as additional longitudinal studies are offered for consideration. This chapter serves as a brief overview of several important areas with regards to the consideration of adolescent bariatric surgery. For technical details of specific procedures, see individual chapters which deal with these.
