Abstract

Flexible sigmoidoscopy with the current 65 cm video endoscope provides a high quality image of the distal colon and rectum. This is primarily a diagnostic instrument that can be used in an office setting with minimal preparation and without the need for anesthesia or conscience sedation. Bowel preparation is simple. By a combination of maneuvers involving dithering, torquing, withdrawal, advancement, and air insufflation, a maximum depth of examination can be achieved. Flexible sigmoidoscopy has a documented role among the various strategies for polyp and cancer screening. In addition, it provides a high quality means of investigating and managing anorectal symptoms.
