Abstract

Compared with most of the Solar System’s planets, Mars is a little on the small side. Measuring an average of 6,792 km in diameter, its dimensions lie neatly between that of the Earth and the Moon, making it the Solar System’s seventh smallest planet. Its surface area of 144,798,500 km² – some 28% of the Earth’s surface area – is roughly equivalent to the area of dry land on the Earth.
