Abstract

Efficiency is a measure of the true effectiveness or performance of a system or a process. It may take different forms but it can generally be defined as the desired output over the required input. Energy conversion efficiency refers to an efficiency definition for a device for which one form of energy is converted to another form. Thus, both the required input and the desired output are expressed in energy units. In this chapter, we provide energy conversion efficiencies for some commonly known systems such as electric resistance heaters, natural gas water heaters, boilers, lighting systems, mechanical devices (pumps and turbines), and generators. Also, a discussion on cryogenic turbine efficiencies is provided.
