Abstract

A history of the differential diagnoses of psychotic disorders from BCE through the anticipated publication of the DSM-V in 2013 is revealing with regard to how the concept of a dichotomy between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder developed, a concept that is now losing support. This chapter focuses on relevant events that occurred in the 1950s and 1960s. The evolution of the concepts of schizophrenia, the major mood disorders and their interrelationships is reviewed from the DSM-I (1952) through the DSM-II (1968) in this chapter. The emphasis is on data that show similarities and overlap between the diagnoses of schizophrenia and psychotic mood disorders.
