Abstract

The glossopharyngeal nerve (cranial nerve IX) is an important consideration as a pain generator or modulator in cases of recalcitrant pain of the face and neck. Although uncommon as an etiology of head and neck pain (0.57–1.3 % of cases of facial pain), impingement or injury to the glossopharyngeal nerve can lead to glossopharyngeal neuralgia, a potentially life-threatening disease. Therefore, it is vital that the interventional pain management specialist learns to recognize disease of cranial nerve IX as well as to become facile with techniques of providing analgesia to this important structure.
