Abstract
When left colon resection is required for diverticulitis or other benign process such as refractory lower gastrointestinal bleeding originating in the left colon, a less extensive mesenteric dissection is required. The conditions present for emergency left colon resection often preclude primary anastomosis, and in those cases, a Hartmann’s resection is indicated. This chapter describes those procedures.
