Intraoperative Consultations of Tissue for Evaluation of Hematolymphoid Disorders or Malignancies: Appropriate Handling, Including Touch Preparation Cytology Versus Frozen Section

Part of the Frozen Section Library book series (FROZEN, volume 10)

This chapter describes the appropriate handling of tissue biopsies submitted to the frozen section room for evaluation of a hematolymphoid disorder or malignancy. Since frozen sectioning of tissues being evaluated for a hematolymphoid malignancy is not generally recommended, this chapter sets forth recommended guidelines for appropriate handling of “lymphoid” tissues (i.e., lymph nodes, tonsil/adenoids, and thymus) as well as extranodal tissues. The recommended guidelines take into account the fact that one does not necessarily know whether the process involving the submitted tissue may be reactive/benign, a hematolymphoid malignancy, or a nonhematolymphoid malignancy.
