Non-European World Views

Part of the Springer Praxis Books book series (PRAXIS)

In the last chapter, we considered the Classical Greek world view that focused on the Earth as the center of the universe (and the solar system). This model was adopted by the Romans, and after the fall of Rome it continued on in Byzantium. It was also taken up and developed further by Islamic countries. Gradually, the model was reincorporated back into Europe during the Middle Ages and Renaissance from Islam (largely through Spain) and from Byzantium (largely through Venice), and the tradition continued its development from then on. This story will be discussed in Chapter  4.
