Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the literature on rural homicide in Europe. Given the scarcity of this literature, it is supplemented with research on rural violence. Data sources include contemporary descriptive and theoretical articles and books on rural homicide and violence in European countries. More general literature on European homicide and violence will be incorporated when rural–urban comparisons are provided. The chapter will begin with a brief historical account of rural homicide in Europe, followed by a comparison of rural and urban homicide trends. Finally, the majority of the chapter will consist of a summary of the contemporary rural homicide and violence literature. The focus of this chapter is on clarifying the current state of rural homicide research in Europe by summarizing the main ideas and findings in this literature.
