Internationalizing the Professional Ethics Curriculum

Abstract

Ethics and ethics documents are developed within a cultural framework and reflect the values of that culture. Psychologists in the USA are aware of the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct yet little is known about ethics documents and developments internationally. Considering the international perspective helps psychologists develop more robust thinking about ethics, thus potentially increasing the likelihood of good ethical behaviors. This chapter will introduce readers to the purpose and history of ethics documents, national, regional, and international documents, research conducted and needed addressing ethical issues, and approaches to teaching ethics from an international perspective. Content suggestions for internationalizing the ethics curriculum are presented, as well as possible assignment suggestions.
