Nutritional Support of the Hospitalized Child

  • Chapter
Advances in Nutritional Research

Abstract

Advances in surgery, nursing, pharmacology, and medical electronics have markedly altered the care and prognosis for children with previously fatal pediatric diseases. Many of these acutely or chronically ill infants and children are unable to consume sufficient food to meet nutritional requirements. Since prolonged illness with inadequate nutrient intake leads to malnutrition, a need has arisen for aggressive nutritional support of seriously ill pediatric patients. Failure to provide such nutritional support may result in prolonged hospitalization and increased morbidity and mortality. The goal of this chapter is to review the established methods of nutritionally evaluating and supporting seriously ill, hospitalized infants and children.
