Abstract

Monitoring acoustic emission (AE) has recently advanced to become a widely used method for testing superconducting magnets. Several attempts to utilize AE techniques during the charging sequence of superconducting magnets have been reported 1–8. The rapidly increased interest in the AE technique was mainly stimulated by the need for additional tools which may help to detect, identify and if possible locate the sources of premature normal transitions in magnets. In fact, all important transient disturbances which are possible causes of training in superconducting magnets have proved to be able to produce AE.
