Abstract
The planned extension of the High Field Test Facility SULTAN at SIN to provide 12T-operation in a 60 cm bore1 has led to an increased SIN involvement in the development of reliable A15-multifilamentary conductors. The selected concept for the SULTAN conductor is a three stage flat cable of Nb3Sn superconductor strands cooled by forced flow of supercritical helium. A prototype first-level cable (primary cable) has been fabricated and evaluated. A BBC processed wire with 306 niobium filaments in a copper matrix was chosen for the basic strand. The fabrication route adopted is the external diffusion technique2.
