Behavioral Methods in Pediatric Chronic Illness

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Clinical Child Psychology ((ACCP,volume 7))

Abstract

This chapter will focus on the behavioral assessment, treatment, and limitations of such treatment with chronically ill children. This area has received increasing attention as the number of children who suffer from chronic illness continues to climb steadily. Although medicine has made dramatic progress in the elimination of most infectious diseases, many physical disorders of both known and unknown etiology fail to respond, on a permanent basis, to any form of medical intervention. Approximately 10% of the children in the United States suffer from some type of chronic illness (Mattsson, 1977); for many of these children a behavioral intervention may help alleviate physical suffering and prevent maladaptive behavioral patterns associated with the disease process from generalizing and continuing into adulthood.
