Ritualized Adult-Male/Adolescent-Male Sexual Behavior in Melanesia: An Anthropological and Ethological Perspective

  • Chapter

Abstract

Sexuality rests, even more than hunger or thirst, on the crossroad between biology and culture, being obvious, inevitable, and rather well developed in humans as compared to other mammals. (A possible exception regarding this comparison is the bonobo; see de Waal, this volume.) At the same time (and possibly as a result), sexuality is subject to the transforming powers of cultural tradition.
