Abstract

There are 75 homologs and isomers within the polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin group (Table 10.1), exhibiting the following characteristics:

  1. (i)

    a relatively stable aromatic nucleus;

  2. (ii)

    many isomers have parallel toxic properties;

  3. (iii)

    increasing halogen content in the two rings increases their environmental stability, lipophilicity, thermal stability, and resistance to acids, bases, oxidants, and reductants; and

  4. (iv)

    property (iii) has contributed to the widespread presence of PCDDs in the environment.
