Abstract
This chapter is concerned with the children’s means length of utterance in morphemes (MLU) for each of the speech samples. MLU is a gross indicator of syntactic complexity, and as such is also a gross indicator of syntactic development. In the present study, MLU will be used to make gross comparisons of the developmental differences between social-context speech and crib speech, as well as to provide a rough idea of each child’s stage of grammatical development (see Brown, 1973, for relevant comparison data and a discussion of the use of MLU as an indicator of grammatical development).
