Abstract
A major requirement helping to shape the character of applied ecology is that the ecologist is challenged to draw upon all his or her knowledge and intuition in solving new problems. Because the solutions are usually far reaching in their implications and because many disciplines are often affected by these solutions, the ecologist is under considerable pressure to act quickly and accurately from a limited base of information.
