Exponential and logarithmic functions

All of the functions we have considered so far have been algebraic functions. An algebraic function is a function involving only the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, powers, and extraction of roots of expressions of the form a·x n , where a and n are real constants. Any function that is not algebraic is called a transcendental function. In this chapter, we will consider two important classes of transcendental functions, the exponential and logarithmic functions, as well as some applications of each.
