Abstract

Associated with every square matrix is a number, called its determinant, symbolized by det(A) or by |A|. As we will see, determinants give some useful information about the matrix and can be used to invert matrices and solve systems of linear equations. In this chapter, we shall consider some ways in which to evaluate determinants as well as some of the applications of determinants.
