Statistics deals with arriving at conclusions about some unknown characteristics of a large population based on a random sample of observations from the population. For example, we might want to know the average weight of a man of age 50. Or we might want to know the probability that a man of age 50 is overweight. In this chapter, we will deal with the statistical tools for answering questions such as these.
